FROM THE GREEK OF BIONA
-
-
I mourn Adonis dead loveliest AdonisB
Dead dead Adonis and the Loves lamentC
Sleep no more Venus wrapped in purple woofD
Wake violet stoled queen and weave the crownA
Of Death 'tis Misery calls for he is deadE
-
The lovely one lies wounded in the mountainsF
His white thigh struck with the white tooth he scarceG
Yet breathes and Venus hangs in agony thereH
The dark blood wanders o'er his snowy limbsI
His eyes beneath their lids are lustrelessI
The rose has fled from his wan lips and thereH
That kiss is dead which Venus gathers yetJ
-
A deep deep wound AdonisI
A deeper Venus bears upon her heartK
See his beloved dogs are gathering roundL
The Oread nymphs are weeping AphroditeM
With hair unbound is wandering through the woodsI
'Wildered ungirt unsandalled the thorns pierceI
Her hastening feet and drink her sacred bloodN
Bitterly screaming out she is driven onA
Through the long vales and her Assyrian boyO
Her love her husband calls the purple bloodN
From his struck thigh stains her white navel nowA
Her bosom and her neck before like snowA
-
Alas for Cytherea the Loves mournA
The lovely the beloved is gone and nowA
Her sacred beauty vanishes awayP
For Venus whilst Adonis lived was fairH
Alas her loveliness is dead with himQ
The oaks and mountains cry Ai ai AdonisI
The springs their waters change to tears and weepR
The flowers are withered up with griefS
-
Ai ai Adonis is deadE
Echo resounds Adonis deadE
Who will weep not thy dreadful woe O VenusI
Soon as she saw and knew the mortal woundL
Of her Adonis saw the life blood flowA
From his fair thigh now wasting wailing loudT
She clasped him and cried 'Stay AdonisI
Stay dearest oneA
and mix my lips with thineA
Wake yet a while Adonis oh but onceI
That I may kiss thee now for the last timeU
But for as long as one short kiss may liveV
Oh let thy breath flow from thy dying soulW
Even to my mouth and heart that I may suckX
That '-
