They know they are going to the filth of numbers and lawsA
to the games anyone can play and the work without fruitB

-
I want to go walking in troubled marshesD
where cold gray coves leave off the mindE
and the scent of rushes twist the windE
as fall covers dungeons of angry sparrowsF
-
I want to go quickly to troubled marshesD
hear the squeak of brackish watersG
over crocks of sponge bubbles crabbingC
their surfaceH
-
I desire stands of dead brushI
to wave in grave solemnityJ
whimpering little housesD
off forest glades to flickerK
out lamps withL
large dogs poised on verandahsD
like stone gargoylesD
-
I want to handle anguish as ifM
it were an interesting baubleN
plucked from the shallowsD
a curious snail with ritual markingsD
or a mauve shellfishO
caught in swift eddiesD
as the tide goes outP
-
I want to examine canker introspectionQ
as a peevish child mightR
faint tracings on an old stoneS
lodged in the most forgottenQ
corner of a graveyardT
sample its wondersD
fingering the many indentationsD
with more than slight aweU
or hear the crashing of wavesD
far off from the physical restraintV
of the marsh or this forgottenQ
burial plot so near an angry seaD
Then awaken as if from a dreamW
rub troubled memories from my eyesD
but never the brainX
for on winter nights just beforeY
retiring as the wind stirs packetsD
of snow or the moon is chasedZ
by skeletal hounds along Gretal treesD
there will come the realizationQ
another day is thruA2
with another night to pilot awayB2
fresh brush rubbleN
before emerging at night's endC2
from the clearing that isD
the treesD
