Pondicherry Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHHH IJBH KIIL

Chess pieces resting upon the jade mantle pieceA
see sampans move quietlyB
thru warm nightC
rich bundles of bougainvillaea crowd market squaresD
where deck chairs extendE
to the Persian GulfF
-
Leisured gentlemenG
finger walking canesH
hold eyelids thick as gobletsH
sharp tridents beside private lairsH
-
Skin in puffy whiteness bulges underI
lamp's white glare becomes copra gatheredJ
miles from Pondicherry sesameB
oil in rotting casksH
-
And the Indian heat closing with certitudeK
akin to the trance of the snake charmerI
holds his flute poised with the Bengali lancerI
riding a slow crop over the prostrate polo ballL
