A well thumbed bookA
like a well thumbed lifeB
whilst you walk this earthC
yet nothing is afootD
as so many small boysE
throwing stones through the funeral parlourF
glass doorG
-
A cake walk Being alive and interactingH
across the face of the multitude is terribleI
algebra running into unfathomable sumsJ
Doing your sums my grade school teacherF
used to say and I still am WhippersnapperF
learning lessons in a strange staminaK
sort of wayL
-
One of the multitude died last nightM
is now resting in a large Victorian parlourF
Even the walls grimace I went by caught a peekN
at the assemblage chasing thru rain to see hisO
last hurrah Look parlour can be deadly seriousP
even if ice cream and pizza attach dead pan humourF
to the term Imagine picking the last day of theK
month to go packing FinaleQ
-
Going down to the sea in ships Death as voyage escapingH
prison confines of the harbour Cliches donate dim glimpsesO
into the apparentR
One sees a lot by the moonS
Crisp fall air andT
leaves yellowingH
frightened from their witsU
to end their brief balloon walk SuchV
faraway faces of Eve and a boatW
moored to a dockX
-
Crossing streetsY
a gray fusillade churchZ
knight errant breaks the nightM
Trees chuckle in coves through wispy cloudsA2
Madonna's face in a shawl only it's not on theK
stained glass window I see her She seemsB2
to be pouting Ashamed of what we have to go throughF
at the end of this filth and stupidity RestrictionsC2
Death lifts them in one heave of the casket More illuminatingH
are the mourners Dashing thru the sleet in brief poignancyQ
shrill old voices that knew the deceased recitingH
what can only be the obvious Leaden eyes that cast no shadowD2
-
Hardly analogous to being called home or going to theirF
rewardE2
More light is cast by the street lamp the pale glow of firefliesF2
and neon signs winking drinking waves like the fisherman'sC2
corkG2
-
This place is holy to me A shrine Night air with mistH2
collectingH
watching flames shuffle over hearth stones leaves mount aK
gladeI2
-
The bitterest berry flower to lily of the valley A heart thatJ2
makes gravelly noise Tiny angel spread of petals no blackK2
funeral vestments for meQ
-
Standing close to the clock and thinkingH
A luxury bought with timeL2
in every evening weeping in the cornerF
