The rich red bloodA
Doth stain the fair green grass and daisies whiteB
In generous floodA
This sun drowsed day for me is darkest nightB
O wreck of splintered wood and twisted wireC
What blind unmeasured hatred you inspireD
Because yours was the power that life to endE
Of him who was my friendE
-
This morn we lay upon the grassF
And watched the languid hours passF
A lark deep in the sky's blue seaG
Sang ecstasies to him and meG
-
And with the daisies did he playH
As on the waving grass we layH
And made a little daisy chainI
To bring his childhood back againJ
-
And while he watched the clouds aboveK
He drifted into thoughts of loveK
He said I know why skylarks singL
Because they love and it is SpringL
-
And if I had a voice as theyH
So would I sing this golden MayH
Because I love and loved am IM
And when I wander through the skyM
-
I wish I had a skylark's voiceN
And with such singing could rejoiceN
Oh happy happy are these daysO
My heart is full of deep felt praiseO
-
And thanks to God who brings this blissP
Oh what a happiness is thisP
To lie upon the grass and knowQ
In two short days that I shall goQ
-
And see my Love's fair face againJ
And wander in some flowery laneI
Forgetting all the world aroundR
And only knowing I have foundR
-
A Spring enchantment which is mineS
Through God's sweet sympathy divineS
May these two days now swiftly passF
He laughed upon the sunlit grassF
-
The days have passed but passed alas how slowQ
See down the road a sad procession goQ
Oh hear the wailing music moanT
Why Why such grief am I to knowQ
Dear God I wish I were aloneT
For by the grave a girl with streaming eyesU
Doth make mine dimV
While high among the sunny springtime skiesU
The larks still hymnV
