That I were Keats And with a golden penA
Could for all time preserve these golden daysB
In rich and glowing verse for poorer menA
Who felt their wonder but could only gazeB
With silent joy upon sweet Autumn's faceC
And not record in any wise its graceC
Alas But I am even dumb as theyD
I cannot bid the fleeting hours stayD
Nor chain one moment on a page's spaceC
-
That I were Grieg Then with a haunting airE
Of murmurs soft and swelling grand refrainsF
Would I express my love of Autumn fairE
With all its wealth of harvest and warm rainsF
And with fantastic melodies inspireG
A memory of each mad sunset's fireH
In which the day goes slowly to its deathI
As through the fragrant woods dim Evening's breathI
Doth soothe to sleep the drowsy songbirds' choirH
-
That I were Corot Then September's goldJ
Would I store up in painted treasuriesK
That when the world seemed grey I could beholdJ
Its blazing colour with sweet memoriesK
And each elusive colour would be mineL
That decorates these afternoons benignL
Ah Then I could enshrine each fleeting hueM
Which dyes the woodland and enslave the blueM
Of sky and haze with genius divineL
-
How sad these wishes When I have no artN
Of poetry or music or of brushO
With which to calm the swelling of my heartN
By capturing the misty country's hushO
In muted violins I cannot hymnP
The shadowy silence of the copses dimP
Nor can I paint September's sky crowned hillsQ
Gone then the wonder which my vision fillsQ
When all the earth is bound by Winter grimP
