PsA
-
-
Dark was the midnight hourB
And wild with storm Nor moon nor pitying starC
Gleamed through the inky darkness from afarC
And Earth seemed reeling blindly to her doomD
As reels some stout ship thro' the midnight gloomD
What time the tempest and the waves have powerB
-
I stood alone that nightE
And stretched my chill hands tow'rd the rayless skyF
And heard the wrathful winds go shrieking byF
And thought of one whose weary feet from farC
Were journeying homeward thro' that night's wild warG
Stricken with dire Consumption's deadly blightE
-
Oh feeble woman's handsA
Outstretched in anguish thro' the enshrouding darkH
Ye cannot reach that far off struggling barkH
That seems so lashed and beaten by the stormI
Ye cannot clasp that fever stricken formI
And lead him home across the cold wet sandsA
-
But thou canst kneel and prayJ
Oh burdened one Thy Father through the nightE
Can hear thy prayer Thy tears fall in His sightE
Call e'er so faintly He thy voice can hearK
Then close the door and pray thy Lord is nearL
Is near to thee and near to him alwayM
-
Thus spake the voice of LoveN
And kneeling there in God's own gracious earK
I whispered all my anguish and my fearL
Then laid me down and slept and saw no moreG
The night's black pall or heard the sullen roarG
Of battling storms that 'mid the darkness stroveO
-
I slept and woke at lengthP
Strengthened sustained Another day I knewQ
That he had been sustained and strengthened tooQ
And when at length his fevered hand I pressedR
I blessed the love that so had brought him restR
And me for added sorrows added strengthP
