ARCH SCHOLAR they'll call youA
Kuno MayerB
Who know the wordC
Behind the wordC
The men of learningD
But who will tell themE
Of the blackbirdC
That your heart heldF
-
On an old thorn treeG
By an ancient rathH
You heard him singD
And with runes you charmed himI
Till he stayed with youA
Giving clear songJ
-
He sang o'er allK
That MaravaunL
Told King GuireM
And he told you howN
Bran heard the singingD
Of a lovely womanL
And sailed for FaerieM
And of how slain princesO
Kept tryst with womenL
Loved beyondP
The pain of deathQ
In days when stillR
The boat of MananaunL
Bore towards EirinnL
-
Arch scholar they'll call youA
Nay Rune masterM
You read in textsS
Not words onlyG
But runes of old timeT
And when you spoke themE
A curlew criedU
Over grass waste TaraM
And a cuckoo calledV
From the height of CashelG
And an eagle flewG
From Emain MachaM
-
Ochone ochoneL
That we'll see no moreM
In the Eastern orM
The Western WorldW
Your great head overM
The lectern bendingD
Nor hear your loreM
By a pleasant firesideU
-
But the runes you've readX
Have given us moreM
Than the sword might win usY
May kind saints of EirinnL
Be beside youG
Where birds on the LivingD
Tree sing the HoursZ
