Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE GHEIJKLK MNONPQRQ STUTVIPII AM sitting here | A |
Since the moon rose in the night | B |
Kindling a fire | C |
And striving to keep it alight | B |
The folk of the house are lying | D |
In slumber deep | E |
The geese will be gabbling soon | F |
The whole of the land is asleep | E |
- | |
May I never leave this world | G |
Until my ill luck is gone | H |
Till I have cows and sheep | E |
And the lad that I love for my own | I |
I would not think it long | J |
The night I would lie at his breast | K |
And the daughters of spite after that | L |
Might say the thing they liked best | K |
- | |
Love takes the place of hate | M |
If a girl have beauty at all | N |
On a bed that was narrow and high | O |
A three month I lay by the wall | N |
When I bethought on the lad | P |
That I left on the brow of the hill | Q |
I wept from dark until dark | R |
And my cheeks have the tear tracks still | Q |
- | |
And O young lad that I love | S |
I am no mark for your scorn | T |
All you can say of me is | U |
Undowered I was born | T |
And if I've no fortune in hand | V |
Nor cattle and sheep of my own | I |
This I can say O lad | P |
I am fitted to lie my lone | I |
