'THE blackbird's in the briarA
The seagull's on the groundB
They are nests and they're more than nests ' he saidC
'They are tokens I have foundB
-
There where the rain dashed briarA
Marks an empty gladeD
The blackbird's nest is seen ' he saidC
'Clay rimmed uncunningly madeD
-
By shore of the inland lakeE
Where surgeless water shovesF
The seagulls have their nests ' he saidC
'As low as catties' hooves '-
-
I heard a poet say itG
The sojourner of a nightH
His head was up to the rafterA
Where he stood in candles' lightH
-
'Your houses are like the seagulls'F
Nests they are scattered and lowI
Like the blackbirds' nests in briars ' he saidC
'Uncunningly made even soI
-
But close to the ground are rearedJ
The wings that have widest swayK
And the birds that sing best in the wood ' he saidC
'Were reared with breasts to the clayK
-
You've wildness I've turned it to songL
You've strength I've turned it to wingsF
The welkin's for your conquest thenM
The wood to your music rings '-
-
I heard a poet say itG
The sojourner of a nightH
His head was up to the rafterA
Where he stood in candles' lightH
