THE great ship lantern girdledA
The tender standing byB
The waning stars cloud shroudedA
The land that we descryC
-
That pale land is our homelandA
And we are bound thereforC
On her lawns nor in her coppiceD
No birds as yet make stirC
-
But birds areC
flying round usD
The white birds of the seaD
It is the breeze of morningE
This that comes humminglyF
-
And like the talk that comes fromG
A room where a babe is bornH
Such clearness and such mysteryD
Are in words said on the mornH
-
Where like a nation clovenH
In two our ranks divideA
One half on the high ship's bulwarkI
One half by the tender's sideA
-
Where like a people sunderedA
Who yet have each other's hailF
Faces look down from the bulwarksD
And look up from the tender's railF
-
And names are called and spokenH
'Nancy ' 'Mary ' 'Owen'H
'Good bye and keep your promise '-
'Farewell to you my son '-
-
They are more spirit stirringE
Than any words that areC
Remembered from the spokesmenH
Of any avatarC
-
'Oh all I had to tell you '-
'Ellen ' 'Michael ' 'Joan'H
'Good bye and God be with you '-
'And can it be you're gone '-
-
The great ship lantern girdledA
Her engines thresh immerseD
The great ship that had stationH
Takes motion for her courseD
-
Her little course the tenderC
Our little ship goes onH
The stars they are fast waningE
But we'll land ere 'tis the dawnH
-
Green greener grows the forelandA
Across the slate dark seaD
And I'll see faces placesD
That have been dreams to meD
