'I KNOW where I'd getA
An ass that would doB
If I had the moneyC
A pound or two 'D
-
Said a ragged manE
To my uncle one dayF
He got the moneyC
And went on his wayF
-
And after that timeG
In market or fairH
I'd look at the assesI
That might be thereH
-
And wonder what kindJ
Of an ass would doB
For a ragged manE
With a pound or twoB
-
O the black and roan horses the street would fillK
Their manes and tails streaming and they standing stillK
-
And their owners the men of estate would be thereH
Refusing gold guineas for a colt or a mareH
-
And one maybe riding up and down like a squireL
So that buyers from Dublin might see and admireL
-
The hunter or racer come to be soldM
And be willing and ready to pay out their goldM
-
With men slouching beside them and buyers not nearN
It's no wonder the asses held down head and earO
-
They had been sold or in by ways boughtP
For a few half crowns tied up in a knotP
-
And no one so poor as to buy one might comeQ
To that fair that had horses so well prized at homeR
-
And then it fell outS
That at Arva or ScrabbeyT
At some down county fairH
Or Mohill or AbbeyT
-
On two asses I happenedU
Without duress or doleV
They were there in the marketW
A dam and her foalV
-
And the owner a womanX
Did not slouch or standY
But in her cart sittingZ
Was as grand as the grandY
-
Like a queen out of ConnachtY
From her toe to her tipA2
Like proud Crania UaileV
On the deck of her shipA2
-
-
And her hair 'twas a maneB2
The blackberries growingZ
Out of the hedge rowsC2
Have the sheen it was showingZ
-
There kind was with kindY
Like the flowers in the grassesI
If the owner was fineD2
As fine were her assesI
-
White white was the motherE2
As a dusty white roadY
Black on back and on shouldersF2
The cross marking showedY
-
She was tall she could carryT
A youth stout of limbG2
Or bear down from her mountainX
The bride decked for himG2
-
Such was the motherE2
The foal's hide was brownH2
All fleecy and curlyT
And soft like bog downH2
-
And it nuzzled its motherE2
Its head to her kneeT
And blue were its eyesI2
Like the pools of the seaT
-
Then I thought all the silverE2
My uncle could drawJ2
Might not pay for the creaturesF2
That that day I sawJ2
-
And I thought that old DamerE2
Who had troughs made of goldY
Could not pay for the assesI
The young and the oldY
-
And I think of them stillV
When I see on the roadsK2
Asses unyokedY
And asses with loadsK2
-
One running and trottingZ
With harness looseL2
And a man striking and hittingZ
Where his stick has useL2
-
And one with a hideY
Like a patched on sackM2
And two creels of turfN2
Upon its backM2
-
And one in the marketY
Meek and brownH2
Its head to the cart shaftsO2
That are downH2
-
Eating its forageP2
A wisp of hayF
In the dust of the highwayF
Munching awayF
-
Unmarked in the marketY
As might be a mouseQ2
Behind a low stoolV
In a quiet houseQ2
-
Then I think of the pairH
Horses might not surpassR2
The dam and her foalV
The white ass and brown assR2
