ONCE I loved a maiden fairA
Over the hills and jar awayB
Lands she had and lovers to spareA
Over the hills and far awayB
And I was stooped and troubled soreC
And my face was pale and the coat I woreC
Was thin as my supper the night beforeC
Over the hills and far awayB
-
Once I passed in the Autumn lateD
Over the hills and jar awayB
Her bawn and barn and painted gateD
Over the hills and jar awayB
She was leaning there in the twilight spaceE
Sweet sorrow was on her fair young faceE
And her wistful eyes were away from the placeE
Over the hills and jar awayB
-
Maybe she thought as she watched me comeF
Over the hills and jar awayB
With my awkward stride and my face so glumF
Over the hills and jar awayB
Spite of his stoop he still is youngG
They say he goes the Shee amongG
Ballads he makes I've heard them sungG
Over the hills and jar awayB
-
She gave me good night in gentle wiseH
Over the hills and jar awayB
Shyly lifting to mine dark eyesH
Over the hills and jar awayB
What could I do but stop and speakI
And she no longer proud but meekI
She plucked me a rose like her wild rose cheekI
Over the hills and jar awayB
-
To morrow Mavourneen a sleeveen wedsH
Over the hills and jar awayB
With corn in haggard and cattle in shedsH
Over the hills and jar awayB
And I who have lost her the dear the rareA
Well I got me this ballad to sing at the fairA
Twill bring enough money to drown my careA
Over the hills and jar awayB
