Rhyme Scheme: ABCDA EFGHE IJIE KEELM NOPQ ERESET UEVWXY

Castro Alves from Brazil for whom did you singA
Did you sing for the flower For the waterB
whose beauty whispered words to the stonesC
Did you sing to the eyes to the torn profileD
of the woman you once loved For the springA
-
Yes but those petals were not dewedE
those black waters had no wordsF
those eyes were those who saw deathG
still burning the tortures behind loveH
Spring was splashed with bloodE
-
I sang for the slaves aboard the shipsI
as a dark branch of wrathJ
They travelled and bled from the shipsI
leaving us the weight of a stolen bloodE
-
I sang in those days against the infernoK
against the sharp languages of greedE
against the gold drenched in the tormentE
against the hand that rose the whipL
against the maestros of darknessM
-
Each rose had one dead man in their rootsN
The light the night the sky were covered in tearsO
the eyes separated from wounded handsP
and it was my voice the only one to fill the silenceQ
-
I wanted that from the man we could be rescuedE
I believed that the route passed through the manR
and from there destiny would be madeE
I sang for those who had no voiceS
My voice hit doors that until then were closedE
so that fighting Freedom could be let inT
-
Castro Alves from Brazil now that your pure bookU
is reborn to a free landE
let me poet of our AmericaV
to crown your head with the laurels of the peopleW
Your voice joined the eternal and loud voice of the menX
You sang well You sang how it must be sungY
