Ghosts of The Towers The Grange The CourtA
Ghosts of the Castle KeepB
Ghosts of the finicking high life sortA
Are growing a trifle cheapB
But here is a spook of another stampC
No thin theatrical shamD
But a spectre who fears not dirt nor dampC
He rides on a London tramD
-
By the curious glance of a mortal eyeE
He is not seen He's heardF
His steps go a creeping creeping byE
He speaks but a single wordF
You may hear his feet you may hear them plainG
For it's odd in a ghost they crunchH
You may hear the whirr of his rattling chainG
And the ting of his ringing punchH
-
The gathering shadows of night fall fastI
The lamps in the street are litJ
To the roof have the eerie footsteps passedI
Where the outside passengers sitJ
To the passenger's side has the spectre pacedK
For a moment he halts they sayL
Then a ring from the punch at the unseen waistK
And the footsteps pass awayL
-
That is the tale of the haunted carM
And if on that car you rideN
You won't believe me have journeyed farM
Ere the spectre seeks your sideN
Ay all unseen by your seat he'll standO
And unless it's a wig your hairP
Will rise at the touch of his icy handO
And the sound of his whispered FareP
-
At the end of the trip when you're getting downQ
And you'll probably simply flyE
Just give the conductor half a crownQ
Ask who is the ghost and whyE
And the man will explain with bated breathR
And point you a moral thusS
'E's a pore young bloke wot wos crushed to deathR
By people as foughtT
As they didn't oughtT
For seats on a crowded busS
