Urbs Sacra Aeterna Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDDCCDEBFEBF

Rome what a scroll of History thine has beenA
In the first days thy sword republicanB
Ruled the whole world for many an age's spanC
Then of the peoples wert thou royal QueenD
Till in thy streets the bearded Goth was seenD
And now upon thy walls the breezes fanC
Ah city crowned by God discrowned by manC
The hated flag of red and white and greenD
When was thy glory when in search for powerE
Thine eagles flew to greet the double sunB
And the wild nations shuddered at thy rodF
Nay but thy glory tarried for this hourE
When pilgrims kneel before the Holy OneB
The prisoned shepherd of the Church of GodF
