To L LA
-
Could we dig up this long buried treasureB
Were it worth the pleasureB
We never could learn love's songC
We are parted too longC
-
Could the passionate past that is fledD
Call back its deadD
Could we live it all over againE
Were it worth the painF
-
I remember we used to meetG
By an ivied seatG
And you warbled each pretty wordH
With the air of a birdH
-
And your voice had a quaver in itI
Just like a linnetI
And shook as the blackbird's throatJ
With its last big noteJ
-
And your eyes they were green and greyK
Like an April dayK
But lit into amethystL
When I stooped and kissedL
-
And your mouth it would never smileM
For a long long whileM
Then it rippled all over with laughterB
Five minutes afterB
-
You were always afraid of a showerB
Just like a flowerB
I remember you started and ranN
When the rain beganN
-
I remember I never could catch youO
For no one could match youO
You had wonderful luminous fleetG
Little wings to your feetG
-
I remember your hair did I tie itI
For it always ran riotP
Like a tangled sunbeam of goldQ
These things are oldQ
-
I remember so well the roomR
And the lilac bloomR
That beat at the dripping paneF
In the warm June rainF
-
And the colour of your gownS
It was amber brownS
And two yellow satin bowsT
From your shoulders roseU
-
And the handkerchief of French laceV
Which you held to your faceV
Had a small tear left a stainF
Or was it the rainF
-
On your hand as it waved adieuO
There were veins of blueO
In your voice as it said good byeW
Was a petulant cryW
-
'You have only wasted your life '-
Ah that was the knifeX
When I rushed through the garden gateY
It was all too lateY
-
Could we live it over againE
Were it worth the painF
Could the passionate past that is fledD
Call back its deadD
-
Well if my heart must breakZ
Dear love for your sakeZ
It will break in music I knowA2
Poets' hearts break soA2
-
But strange that I was not toldQ
That the brain can holdQ
In a tiny ivory cellA
God's heaven and hellA
