A
-
'T is midnight through my troubled dreamB
Loud wails the tempest's cryC
Before the gale with tattered sailD
A ship goes plunging byC
What name Where bound The rocks aroundE
Repeat the loud hallooD
The good ship Union Southward boundE
God help her and her crewF
-
And is the old flag flying stillD
That o'er your fathers flewF
With bands of white and rosy lightG
And field of starry blueF
Ay look aloft its folds full oftH
Have braved the roaring blastI
And still shall fly when from the skyC
This black typhoon has pastI
-
Speak pilot of the storm tost barkJ
May I thy peril shareK
O landsman there are fearful seasL
The brave alone may dareK
Nay ruler of the rebel deepM
What matters wind or waveN
The rocks that wreck your reeling deckO
Will leave me naught to saveN
-
O landsman art thou false or trueF
What sign hast thou to showP
The crimson stains from loyal veinsQ
That hold my heart blood's flowP
Enough what more shall honor claimR
I know the sacred signS
Above thy head our flag shall spreadT
Our ocean path be thineS
-
The bark sails on the Pilgrim's CapeU
Lies low along her leeD
Whose headland crooks its anchor flukesV
To lock the shore and seaD
No treason here it cost too dearW
To win this barren realmX
And true and free the hands must beD
That hold the whaler's helmX
-
Still on Manhattan's narrowing bayY
No rebel cruiser scarsZ
Her waters feel no pirate's keelD
That flaunts the fallen starsZ
But watch the light on yonder heightG
Ay pilot have a careK
Some lingering cloud in mist may shroudA2
The capes of DelawareK
-
Say pilot what this fort may beD
Whose sentinels look downB2
From moated walls that show the seaD
Their deep embrasures' frownB2
The Rebel host claims all the coastC2
But these are friends we knowP
Whose footprints spoil the 'sacred soil '-
And this is Fort MonroeP
-
The breakers roar how bears the shoreD2
The traitorous wreckers' handsE2
Have quenched the blaze that poured its raysF2
Along the Hatteras sandsE2
Ha say not so I see its glowP
Again the shoals displayY
The beacon light that shines by nightG
The Union Stars by dayY
-
The good ship flies to milder skiesG2
The wave more gently flowsH2
The softening breeze wafts o'er the seasL
The breath of Beaufort's roseH2
What fold is this the sweet winds kissI2
Fair striped and many starredJ2
Whose shadow palls these orphaned wallsK2
The twins of BeauregardJ2
-
What heard you not Port Royal's doomL2
How the black war ships cameR
And turned the Beaufort roses' bloomL2
To redder wreaths of flameR
How from Rebellion's broken reedM2
We saw his emblem fallD
As soon his cursed poison weedM2
Shall drop from Sumter's wallD
-
On on Pulaski's iron hailD
Falls harmless on TybeeD
The good ship feels the freshening galesN2
She strikes the open seaD
She rounds the point she threads the keysL
That guard the Land of FlowersO2
And rides at last where firm and fastI
Her own Gibraltar towersO2
-
The good ship Union's voyage is o'erP2
At anchor safe she swingsQ2
And loud and clear with cheer on cheerW
Her joyous welcome ringsQ2
Hurrah Hurrah it shakes the waveN
It thunders on the shoreD2
One flag one land one heart one handR2
One Nation evermoreD2
