It may be so perhaps thou hastA
A warm and loving heartB
I will not blame thee for thy faceC
Poor devil as thou artB
-
That thing thou fondly deem'st a noseD
Unsightly though it beE
In spite of all the cold world's scornF
It may be much to theeE
-
Those eyes among thine elder friendsG
Perhaps they pass for blueH
No matter if a man can seeE
What more have eyes to doH
-
Thy mouth that fissure in thy faceC
By something like a chinI
May be a very useful placeC
To put thy victual inI
-
I know thou hast a wife at homeJ
I know thou hast a childK
By that subdued domestic smileL
Upon thy features mildK
-
That wife sits fearless by thy sideM
That cherub on thy kneeE
They do not shudder at thy looksN
They do not shrink from theeE
-
Above thy mantel is a hookO
A portrait once was thereP
It was thine only ornamentQ
Alas that hook is bareP
-
She begged thee not to let it goR
She begged thee all in vainS
She wept and breathed a trembling prayerP
To meet it safe againT
-
It was a bitter sight to seeE
That picture torn awayU
It was a solemn thought to thinkV
What all her friends would sayU
-
And often in her calmer hoursW
And in her happy dreamsX
Upon its long deserted hookO
The absent portrait seemsX
-
Thy wretched infant turns his headY
In melancholy wiseZ
And looks to meet the placid stareP
Of those unbending eyesZ
-
I never saw thee lovely oneA2
Perchance I never mayU
It is not often that we crossB2
Such people in our wayU
-
But if we meet in distant yearsC2
Or on some foreign shoreD2
Sure I can take my Bible oathE2
I've seen that face beforeD2
