To Rutherford Birchard Hayes Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CCDDEE FFAA GGCCHHII JJKL MMNNOODDPP

AT THE DINNER TO THE PRESIDENTA
BOSTON JUNEB
-
How to address him awkward it is trueC
Call him 'Great Father ' as the Red Men doC
Borrow some title this is not the placeD
That christens men Your Highness and Your GraceD
We tried such names as these awhile you knowE
But left them off a century agoE
-
His Majesty We've had enough of thatF
Besides that needs a crown he wears a hatF
What if to make the nicer ears contentA
We say His Honesty the PresidentA
-
Sir we believed you honest truthful braveG
When to your hands their precious trust we gaveG
And we have found you better than we knewC
Braver and not less honest not less trueC
So every heart has opened every handH
Tingles with welcome and through all the landH
All voices greet you in one broad acclaimI
Healer of strife Has earth a nobler nameI
-
What phrases mean you do not need to learnJ
We must be civil and they serve our turnJ
'Your most obedient humble' means means whatK
Something the well bred signer just is notL
-
Yet there are tokens sir you must believeM
There is one language never can deceiveM
The lover knew it when the maiden smiledN
The mother knows it when she clasps her childN
Voices may falter trembling lips turn paleO
Words grope and stumble this will tell their taleO
Shorn of all rhetoric bare of all pretenceD
But radiant warm with Nature's eloquenceD
Look in our eyes Your welcome waits you thereP
North South East West from all and everywhereP
