AT A DINNER GIVEN HIM ON HIS EIGHTIETH BIRTHDAYA
DECEMBERB
-
With a bronze statuette of John of Bologna's MercuryC
presented by a few friendsD
-
FIT emblem for the altar's sideE
And him who serves its daily needF
The stay the solace and the guideE
Of mortal men whate'er his creedF
-
Flamen or Auspex Priest or BonzeD
He feeds the upward climbing fireB
Still teaching like the deathless bronzeD
Man's noblest lesson to aspireG
-
Hermes lies prone by fallen JoveH
Crushed are the wheels of Krishna's carI
And o'er Dodona's silent groveH
Streams the white ray from Bethlehem's starI
-
Yet snatched from Time's relentless clutchJ
A godlike shape that human handsD
Have fired with Art's electric touchJ
The herald of Olympus standsD
-
Ask not what ore the furnace knewK
Love mingled with the flowing massD
And lends its own unchanging hueK
Like gold in Corinth's molten brassD
-
Take then our gift this airy formL
Whose bronze our benedictions gildM
The hearts of all its givers warmL
With love by freezing years unchilledM
-
With eye undimmed with strength unwornK
Still toiling in your Master's fieldM
Before you wave the growths unshornK
Their ripened harvest yet to yieldM
-
True servant of the Heavenly SireB
To you our tried affection clingsD
Bids you still labor still aspireG
But clasps your feet and steals their wingsD
