I Love to hear thine earnest voiceA
Wherever thou art hidB
Thou testy little dogmatistB
Thou pretty KatydidB
Thou mindest me of gentlefolksA
Old gentlefolks are theyC
Thou say'st an undisputed thingD
In such a solemn wayC
-
Thou art a female KatydidB
I know it by the trillE
That quivers through thy piercing notesA
So petulant and shrillE
I think there is a knot of youF
Beneath the hollow treeG
A knot of spinster KatydidsA
Do Katydids drink teaG
-
Oh tell me where did Katy liveH
And what did Katy doF
And was she very fair and youngI
And yet so wicked tooF
Did Katy love a naughty manJ
Or kiss more cheeks than oneK
I warrant Katy did no moreL
Than many a Kate has doneK
-
Dear me I'll tell you all aboutB
My fuss with little JaneM
And Ann with whom I used to walkN
So often down the laneM
And all that tore their locks of blackO
Or wet their eyes of blueF
Pray tell me sweetest KatydidB
What did poor Katy doF
-
Ah no the living oak shall crashP
That stood for ages stillE
The rock shall rend its mossy baseA
And thunder down the hillE
Before the little KatydidB
Shall add one word to tellQ
The mystic story of the maidB
Whose name she knows so wellQ
-
Peace to the ever murmuring raceA
And when the latest oneK
Shall fold in death her feeble wingsA
Beneath the autumn sunK
Then shall she raise her fainting voiceA
And lift her drooping lidB
And then the child of future yearsA
Shall hear what Katy didB
