WAN VISAGED thing thy virgin leafA
To me looks more than deadly paleB
Unknowing what may stain thee yetC
A poem or a taleB
-
Who can thy unborn meaning scanD
Can Seer or Sibyl read thee nowE
No seek to trace the fate of manD
Writ on his infant browE
-
Love may light on thy snowy cheekF
And shake his Eden breathing plumesG
Then shalt thou tell how Lelia smilesH
Or Angelina bloomsG
-
Satire may lift his bearded lanceI
Forestalling Time's slow moving scytheJ
And scattered on thy little fieldK
Disjointed bards may writheJ
-
Perchance a vision of the nightL
Some grizzled spectre gaunt and thinM
Or sheeted corpse may stalk alongN
Or skeleton may grinM
-
If it should be in pensive hourO
Some sorrow moving theme I tryP
Ah maiden how thy tears will fallQ
For all I doom to dieP
-
But if in merry mood I touchR
Thy leaves then shall the sight of theeS
Sow smiles as thick on rosy lipsT
As ripples on the seaS
-
The Weekly press shall gladly stoopU
To bind thee up among its sheavesV
The Daily steal thy shining oreW
To gild its leaden leavesV
-
Thou hast no tongue yet thou canst speakF
Till distant shores shall hear the soundX
Thou hast no life yet thou canst breatheY
Fresh life on all aroundX
-
Thou art the arena of the wiseZ
The noiseless battle ground of fameA2
The sky where halos may be wreathedX
Around the humblest nameA2
-
Take then this treasure to thy trustX
To win some idle reader's smileB2
Then fade and moulder in the dustX
Or swell some bonfire's pileB2
