The Strong Heroic Line Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KKLLFFMM MMNNOOPPPMM

FRIENDS of the Muse to you of right belongA
The first staid footsteps of my square toed songA
Full well I know the strong heroic lineB
Has lost its fashion since I made it mineB
But there are tricks old singers will not learnC
And this grave measure still must serve my turnC
So the old bird resumes the selfsame noteD
His first young summer wakened in his throatD
The selfsame tune the old canary singsE
And all unchanged the bobolink s carol ringsE
When the tired songsters of the day are stillF
The thrush repeats his long remembered trillF
Age alters not the crow s persistent cawG
The Yankee s Haow the stammering Briton s HawG
And so the hand that takes the lyre for youH
Plays the old tune on strings that once were newH
Nor let the rhymester of the hour derideI
The straight backed measure with its stately strideI
It gave the mighty voice of Dryden scopeJ
It sheathed the steel bright epigrams of PopeJ
In Goldsmith s verse it learned a sweeter strainK
Byron and Campbell wore its clanking chainK
I smile to listen while the critic s scornL
Flouts the proud purple kings have nobly wornL
Bid each new rhymer try his dainty skillF
And mould his frozen phrases as he willF
We thank the artist for his neat deviceM
The shape is pleasing though the stuff is iceM
-
Fashions will change the new costume alluresM
Unfading still the better type enduresM
While the slashed doublet of the cavalierN
Gave the old knight the pomp of chanticleerN
Our last hatched dandy with his glass and stickO
Recalls the semblance of a new born chickO
To match the model he is aiming atP
He ought to wear an eggshell for a hatP
He ought to wear an eggshell for a hatP
Which of these objects would a painter chooseM
And which Velasquez or Van Dyck refuseM
