The Promise Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLML NONO P

NOT charity we askA
Nor yet thy gift refuseB
Please thy light fancy with the easy taskA
Only to look and chooseB
-
The little heeded toyC
That wins thy treasured goldD
May be the dearest memory holiest joyC
Of coming years untoldD
-
Heaven rains on every heartE
But there its showers divideF
The drops of mercy choosing as they partE
The dark or glowing sideF
-
One kindly deed may turnG
The fountain of thy soulH
To love s sweet day star that shall o er thee burnG
Long as its currents rollH
-
The pleasures thou hast plannedI
Where shall their memory beJ
When the white angel with the freezing handI
Shall sit and watch by theeJ
-
Living thou dost not liveK
If mercy s spring run dryL
What Heaven has lent thee wilt thou freely giveM
Dying thou shalt not dieL
-
HE promised even soN
To thee his lips repeatO
Behold the tears that soothed thy sister s woeN
Have washed thy Master s feetO
-
MarchP
