OH for one hour of youthful joyA
Give back my twentieth springB
I'd rather laugh a bright haired boyA
Than reign a gray beard kingB
-
Off with the spoils of wrinkled ageC
Away with Learning's crownD
Tear out life's Wisdom written pageC
And dash its trophies downD
-
One moment let my life blood streamE
From boyhood's fount of flameF
Give me one giddy reeling dreamE
Of life all love and fameF
-
-
-
My listening angel heard the prayerG
And calmly smiling saidH
If I but touch thy silvered hairG
Thy hasty wish hath spedH
-
But is there nothing in thy trackI
To bid thee fondly stayJ
While the swift seasons hurry backI
To find the wished for dayJ
-
Ah truest soul of womankindJ
Without thee what were lifeK
One bliss I cannot leave behindJ
I'll take my precious wifeK
-
The angel took a sapphire penL
And wrote in rainbow dewJ
The man would be a boy againL
And be a husband tooJ
-
And is there nothing yet unsaidJ
Before the change appearsM
Remember all their gifts have fledJ
With those dissolving yearsM
-
Why yes for memory would recallN
My fond paternal joysO
I could not bear to leave them allN
I'll take my girl and boysO
-
The smiling angel dropped his penL
Why this will never doJ
The man would be a boy againL
And be a father tooJ
-
-
-
And so I laughed my laughter wokeP
The household with its noiseO
And wrote my dream when morning brokeP
To please the gray haired boysO

Anne Phelan: A wonderful poem with lovely sentiments. We found a hand written copy among my father's papers after he died. It obviously struck a chord with him - particular as he has one daughter and two sons, so that line, indeed the whole poem, seemed to come straight from him... almost like a little message he left behind for us.
