THERE was a sound of hurrying feetA
A tramp on echoing stairsB
There was a rush along the aislesC
It was the hour of prayersB
-
And on like Ocean's midnight waveD
The current rolled alongE
When suddenly a stranger formF
Was seen amidst the throngE
-
He was a dark and swarthy manG
That uninvited guestH
A faded coat of bottle greenI
Was buttoned round his breastH
-
There was not one among them allJ
Could say from whence he cameK
Nor beardless boy nor ancient manG
Could tell that stranger's nameK
-
All silent as the sheeted deadL
In spite of sneer and frownM
Fast by a gray haired senior's sideN
He sat him boldly downM
-
There was a look of horror flashedO
From out the tutor's eyesP
When all around him rose to prayQ
The stranger did not riseP
-
A murmur broke along the crowdR
The prayer was at an endS
With ringing heels and measured treadL
A hundred forms descendS
-
Through sounding aisle o'er grating stairT
The long procession pouredU
Till all were gathered on the seatsV
Around the Commons boardU
-
That fearful stranger down he satW
Unasked yet undismayedW
And on his lip a rising smileX
Of scorn or pleasure playedW
-
He took his hat and hung it upY
With slow but earnest airT
He stripped his coat from off his backZ
And placed it on a chairT
-
Then from his nearest neighbor's sideW
A knife and plate he drewA2
And reaching out his hand againB2
He took his teacup tooA2
-
How fled the sugar from the bowlC2
How sunk the azure creamD2
They vanished like the shapes that floatW
Upon a summer's dreamD2
-
A long long draught an outstretched handW
And crackers toast and teaW
They faded from the stranger's touchE2
Like dew upon the seaW
-
Then clouds were dark on many a browF2
Fear sat upon their soulsG2
And in a bitter agonyW
They clasped their buttered rollsG2
-
A whisper trembled through the crowdW
Who could the stranger beW
And some were silent for they thoughtW
A cannibal was heW
-
What if the creature should ariseP
For he was stout and tallJ
And swallow down a sophomoreH2
Coat crow's foot cap and allJ
-
All sullenly the stranger roseI2
They sat in mute despairT
He took his hat from off the pegJ2
His coat from off the chairT
-
Four freshmen fainted on the seatW
Six swooned upon the floorH2
Yet on the fearful being passedW
And shut the chapel doorH2
-
There is full many a starving manG
That walks in bottle greenI
But never more that hungry oneK2
In Commons hall was seenI
-
Yet often at the sunset hourL2
When tolls the evening bellM2
The freshman lingers on the stepsN2
That frightful tale to tellM2
