W W SWAINA
-
BEHOLD not him we knewB
This was the prison which his soul looked throughB
Tender and brave and trueB
-
His voice no more is heardC
And his dead name that dear familiar wordC
Lies on our lips unstirredC
-
He spake with poet's tongueD
Living for him the minstrel's lyre was strungD
He shall not die unsungD
-
Grief tried his love and painA
And the long bondage of his martyr chainA
Vexed his sweet soul in vainA
-
It felt life's surges breakE
As girt with stormy seas his island lakeE
Smiling while tempests wakeE
-
How can we sorrow moreF
Grieve not for him whose heart had gone beforeF
To that untrodden shoreF
-
Lo through its leafy screenG
A gleam of sunlight on a ring of greenG
Untrodden half unseenG
-
Here let his body restC
Where the calm shadows that his soul loved bestC
May slide above his breastC
-
Smooth his uncurtained bedC
And if some natural tears are softly shedC
It is not for the deadC
-
Fold the green turf arightC
For the long hours before the morning's lightC
And say the last Good NightC
-
And plant a clear white stoneH
Close by those mounds which hold his loved his ownH
Lonely but not aloneH
-
Here let him sleeping lieI
Till Heaven's bright watchers slumber in the skyI
And Death himself shall dieI
