I saw him once beforeA
As he passed by the doorA
And againB
The pavement stones resoundC
As he totters o'er the groundC
With his caneD
-
They say that in his primeE
Ere the pruning knife of TimeE
Cut him downF
Not a better man was foundC
By the Crier on his roundC
Through the townF
-
But now he walks the streetsG
And he looks at all he meetsG
Sad and wanH
And he shakes his feeble headI
That it seems as if he saidI
They are goneJ
-
The mossy marbles restK
On the lips that he has prestK
In their bloomL
And the names he loved to hearM
Have been carved for many a yearN
On the tombL
-
My grandmamma has saidI
Poor old lady she is deadI
Long agoO
That he had a Roman noseP
And his cheek was like a roseP
In the snowO
-
But now his nose is thinQ
And it rests upon his chinQ
Like a staffR
And a crook is in his backS
And a melancholy crackS
In his laughR
-
I know it is a sinQ
For me to sit and grinQ
At him hereM
But the old three cornered hatT
And the breeches and all thatT
Are so queerN
-
And if I should live to beU
The last leaf upon the treeU
In the springV
Let them smile as I do nowW
At the old forsaken boughW
Where I clingV
