The Gray Chief Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AB CDED FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM

FOR THE MEETING OF THE MASSACHUSETTSA
MEDICAL SOCIETYB
-
'T is sweet to fight our battles o'erC
And crown with honest praiseD
The gray old chief who strikes no moreE
The blow of better daysD
-
Before the true and trusted sageF
With willing hearts we bendG
When years have touched with hallowing ageF
Our Master Guide and FriendG
-
For all his manhood's labor pastH
For love and faith long triedI
His age is honored to the lastH
Though strength and will have diedI
-
But when untamed by toil and strifeJ
Full in our front he standsK
The torch of light the shield of lifeJ
Still lifted in his handsK
-
No temple though its walls resoundL
With bursts of ringing cheersM
Can hold the honors that surroundL
His manhood's twice told yearsM
