The Golden Flower Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCE FGFGHIHI JKJKALAL MNMNJOJO PQPRSTST

When Advent dawns with lessening daysA
While earth awaits the angels' hymnB
When bare as branching coral swaysA
In whistling winds each leafless limbB
When spring is but a spendthrift's dreamC
And summer's wealth a wasted dowerD
Nor dews nor sunshine may redeemC
Then autumn coins his Golden FlowerE
-
Soft was the violet's vernal hueF
Fresh was the rose's morning redG
Full orbed the stately dahlia grewF
All gone their short lived splendors shedG
The shadows lengthening stretch at noonH
The fields are stripped the groves are dumbI
The frost flowers greet the icy moonH
Then blooms the bright chrysanthemumI
-
The stiffening turf is white with snowJ
Yet still its radiant disks are seenK
Where soon the hallowed morn will showJ
The wreath and cross of Christmas greenK
As if in autumn's dying daysA
It heard the heavenly song afarL
And opened all its glowing raysA
The herald lamp of Bethlehem's starL
-
Orphan of summer kindly sentM
To cheer the fading year's declineN
In all that pitying Heaven has lentM
No fairer pledge of hope than thineN
Yes June lies hid beneath the snowJ
And winter's unborn heir shall claimO
For every seed that sleeps belowJ
A spark that kindles into flameO
-
Thy smile the scowl of winter bravesP
Last of the bright robed flowery trainQ
Soft sighing o'er the garden gravesP
Farewell farewell we meet againR
So may life's chill November bringS
Hope's golden flower the last of allT
Before we hear the angels singS
Where blossoms never fade and fallT
