READ AT THE MEETING OF THE HARVARD ALUMNIA
ASSOCIATION JUNEB
-
THE fount the Spaniard sought in vainC
Through all the land of flowersD
Leaps glittering from the sandy plainC
Our classic grove embowersD
Here youth unchanging blooms and smilesD
Here dwells eternal springE
And warm from Hope's elysian islesD
The winds their perfume bringE
-
Here every leaf is in the budF
Each singing throat in tuneB
And bright o'er evening's silver floodF
Shines the young crescent moonB
What wonder Age forgets his staffG
And lays his glasses downH
And gray haired grandsires look and laughG
As when their locks were brownH
-
With ears grown dull and eyes grown dimI
They greet the joyous dayJ
That calls them to the fountain's brimI
To wash their years awayJ
What change has clothed the ancient sireK
In sudden youth For toL
The Judge the Doctor and the SquireM
Are Jack and Bill and JoeN
-
And be his titles what they willO
In spite of manhood's claimP
The graybeard is a school boy stillO
And loves his school boy nameP
It calms the ruler's stormy breastQ
Whom hurrying care pursuesD
And brings a sense of peace and restQ
Like slippers after shoesD
-
And what are all the prizes wonR
To youth's enchanted viewL
And what is all the man has doneR
To what the boy may doL
O blessed fount whose waters flowN
Alike for sire and sonR
That melts our winter's frost and snowN
And makes all ages oneR
-
I pledge the sparkling fountain's tideS
That flings its golden showerK
With age to fill and youth to guideS
Still fresh in morning flowerK
Flow on with ever widening streamT
In ever brightening mornU
Our story's pride our future's dreamT
The hope of times unbornU
