The Dying Seneca Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EFGFHH IJIKLL MNONPP

HE died not as the martyr diesA
Wrapped in his living shroud of flameB
He fell not as the warrior fallsC
Gasping upon the field of fameB
A gentler passage to the graveD
The murderer's softened fury gaveD
-
Rome's slaughtered sons and blazing pilesE
Had tracked the purpled demon's pathF
And yet another victim livedG
To fill the fiery scroll of wrathF
Could not imperial vengeance spareH
His furrowed brow and silver hairH
-
The field was sown with noble bloodI
The harvest reaped in burning tearsJ
When rolling up its crimson floodI
Broke the long gathering tide of yearsK
His diadem was rent awayL
And beggars trampled on his clayL
-
None wept none pitied they who kneltM
At morning by the despot's throneN
At evening dashed the laurelled bustO
And spurned the wreaths themselves had strownN
The shout of triumph echoed wideP
The self stung reptile writhed and diedP
