Now by the blessed Paphian queenA
Who heaves the breast of sweet sixteenA
By every name I cut on barkB
Before my morning star grew darkB
By Hymen s torch by Cupid s dartC
By all that thrills the beating heartC
The bright black eye the melting blueD
I cannot choose between the twoD
-
I had a vision in my dreamsE
I saw a row of twenty beamsE
From every beam a rope was hungF
In every rope a lover swungF
I asked the hue of every eyeG
That bade each luckless lover dieG
Ten shadowy lips said heavenly blueD
And ten accused the darker hueD
-
I asked a matron which she deemedH
With fairest light of beauty beamedH
She answered some thought both were fairI
Give her blue eyes and golden hairI
I might have liked her judgment wellJ
But as she spoke she rung the bellJ
And all her girls nor small nor fewD
Came marching in their eyes were blueD
-
I asked a maiden back she flungF
The locks that round her forehead hungF
And turned her eye a glorious oneK
Bright as a diamond in the sunK
On me until beneath its raysL
I felt as if my hair would blazeL
She liked all eyes but eyes of greenA
She looked at me what could she meanA
-
Ah many lids Love lurks betweenA
Nor heeds the coloring of his screenA
And when his random arrows flyG
The victim falls but knows not whyG
Gaze not upon his shield of jetM
The shaft upon the string is setM
Look not beneath his azure veilN
Though every limb were cased in mailN
-
Well both might make a martyr breakO
The chain that bound him to the stakeO
And both with but a single rayP
Can melt our very hearts awayP
And both when balanced hardly seemQ
To stir the scales or rock the beamQ
But that is dearest all the whileR
That wears for us the sweetest smileR
