St. Anthony The Reformer - His Temptation Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

No fear lest praise should make us proudA
We know how cheaply that is wonB
The idle homage of the crowdA
Is proof of tasks as idly doneB
-
A surface smile may pay the toilC
That follows still the conquering RightD
With soft white hands to dress the spoilC
That sun browned valor clutched in fightD
-
Sing the sweet song of other daysE
Serenely placid safely trueF
And o'er the present's parching waysE
The verse distils like evening dewF
-
But speak in words of living powerG
They fall like drops of scalding rainH
That plashed before the burning showerG
Swept o' er the cities of the plainH
-
Then scowling Hate turns deadly paleI
Then Passion's half coiled adders springJ
And smitten through their leprous mailI
Strike right and left in hope to stingJ
-
If thou unmoved by poisoning wrathK
Thy feet on earth thy heart aboveL
Canst walk in peace thy kingly pathK
Unchanged in trust unchilled in loveL
-
Too kind for bitter words to grieveM
Too firm for clamor to dismayN
When Faith forbids thee to believeM
And Meekness calls to disobeyN
-
Ah then beware of mortal prideO
The smiling pride that calmly scornsP
Those foolish fingers crimson dyedO
In laboring on thy crown of thornsP
