AND what shall be the song to nightA
If song there needs must beB
If every year that brings us hereC
Must steal an hour from meB
Say shall it ring a merry pealD
Or heave a mourning sighE
O'er shadows cast by years long pastF
On moments flitting byE
-
Nay take the first unbidden lineG
The idle hour may sendH
No studied grace can mend the faceI
That smiles as friend on friendH
The balsam oozes from the pineG
The sweetness from the roseJ
And so unsought a kindly thoughtK
Finds language as it flowsJ
-
The years rush by in sounding flightA
I hear their ceaseless wingsL
Their songs I hear some far some nearM
And thus the burden ringsL
'The morn has fled the noon has pastF
The sun will soon be setN
The twilight fade to midnight shadeO
Remember and Forget '-
-
Remember all that time has broughtK
The starry hope on highE
The strength attained the courage gainedP
The love that cannot dieE
Forget the bitter brooding thoughtK
The word too harshly saidQ
The living blame love hates to nameR
The frailties of the deadQ
-
We have been younger so they sayS
But let the seasons rollT
He doth not lack an almanacU
Whose youth is in his soulT
The snows may clog life's iron trackU
But does the axle tireV
While bearing swift through bank and driftW
The engine's heart of fireV
-
I lift a goblet in my handX
If good old wine it holdY
An ancient skin to keep it inZ
Is just the thing we 're toldY
We 're grayer than the dusty flaskA2
We 're older than our wineG
Our corks reveal the 'white top' sealD
The stamp of '-
-
Ah Boys we clustered in the dawnB2
To sever in the darkC2
A merry crew with loud hallooD
We climbed our painted barkC2
We sailed her through the four years' cruiseD2
We 'll sail her to the lastF
Our dear old flag though but a ragE2
Still flying on her mastF
-
So gliding on each winter's galeD
Shall pipe us all on deckF2
Till faint and few the gathering crewG2
Creep o'er the parting wreckF2
Her sails and streamers spread aloftH2
To fortune's rain or shineG
Till storm or sun shall all be oneI2
And down goes TWENTY NINEG
