Say not the Poet diesA
Though in the dust he liesA
He cannot forfeit his melodious breathB
Unsphered by envious deathB
Life drops the voiceless myriads from its rollC
Their fate he cannot shareD
Who in the enchanted airD
Sweet with the lingering strains that Echo stoleC
Has left his dearer self the music of his soulC
-
We o'er his turf may raiseE
Our notes of feeble praiseE
And carve with pious care for after eyesA
The stone with Here he liesA
He for himself has built a nobler shrineF
Whose walls of stately rhymeG
Roll back the tides of timeG
While o'er their gates the gleaming tablets shineF
That wear his name inwrought with many a golden lineF
-
Call not our Poet deadH
Though on his turf we treadH
Green is the wreath their brows so long have wornI
The minstrels of the mornI
Who while the Orient burned with new born flameJ
Caught that celestial fireK
And struck a Nation's lyreL
These taught the western winds the poet's nameJ
Theirs the first opening buds the maiden flowers of fameJ
-
Count not our Poet deadH
The stars shall watch his bedH
The rose of June its fragrant life renewM
His blushing mound to strewM
And all the tuneful throats of summer swellN
With trills as crystal clearO
As when he wooed the earP
Of the young muse that haunts each wooded dellN
With songs of that rough land he loved so long and wellN
-
He sleeps he cannot dieQ
As evening's long drawn sighQ
Lifting the rose leaves on his peaceful moundR
Spreads all their sweets aroundR
So laden with his song the breezes blowS
From where the rustling sedgeT
Frets our rude ocean's edgeT
To the smooth sea beyond the peaks of snowS
His soul the air enshrines and leaves but dust belowS
