-
-
ONE memory trembles on our lipsB
It throbs in every breastC
In tear dimmed eyes in mirth's eclipseB
The shadow stands confessedC
-
O silent voice that cheered so longD
Our manhood's marching dayE
Without thy breath of heavenly songD
How weary seems the wayE
-
Vain every pictured phrase to tellF
Our sorrowing heart's desireG
The shattered harp the broken shellF
The silent unstrung lyreH
-
For youth was round us while he sangI
It glowed in every toneJ
With bridal chimes the echoes rangI
And made the past our ownJ
-
Oh blissful dream Our nursery joysK
We know must have an endL
But love and friendship's broken toysK
May God's good angels mendL
-
The cheering smile the voice of mirthM
And laughter's gay surpriseN
That please the children born of earthM
Why deem that Heaven deniesN
-
Methinks in that refulgent sphereO
That knows not sun or moonP
An earth born saint might long to hearQ
One verse of 'Bonny Doon'P
-
Or walking through the streets of goldR
In heaven's unclouded lightS
His lips recall the song of oldR
And hum 'The sky is bright '-
-
And can we smile when thou art deadT
Ah brothers even soU
The rose of summer will be redT
In spite of winter's snowU
-
Thou wouldst not leave us all in gloomV
Because thy song is stillW
Nor blight the banquet garland's bloomV
With grief's untimely chillW
-
The sighing wintry winds complainP
The singing bird has flownP
Hark heard I not that ringing strainP
That clear celestial toneP
-
How poor these pallid phrases seemX
How weak this tinkling lineP
As warbles through my waking dreamX
That angel voice of thineP
-
Thy requiem asks a sweeter layE
It falters on my tongueY
For all we vainly strive to sayE
Thou shouldst thyself have sungY
