One memory trembles on our lipsA
It throbs in every breastB
In tear dimmed eyes in mirth's eclipseA
The shadow stands confessedB
-
O silent voice that cheered so longC
Our manhood's marching dayD
Without thy breath of heavenly songC
How weary seems the wayD
-
Vain every pictured phrase to tellE
Our sorrowing heart's desireF
The shattered harp the broken shellE
The silent unstrung lyreG
-
For youth was round us while he sangH
It glowed in every toneI
With bridal chimes the echoes rangH
And made the past our ownI
-
Oh blissful dream Our nursery joysJ
We know must have an endK
But love and friendship's broken toysJ
May God's good angels mendK
-
The cheering smile the voice of mirthL
And laughter's gay surpriseM
That please the children born of earthL
Why deem that Heaven deniesM
-
Methinks in that refulgent sphereN
That knows not sun or moonO
An earth born saint might long to hearP
One verse of Bonny DoonO
-
Or walking through the streets of goldQ
In heaven's unclouded lightR
His lips recall the song of oldQ
And hum The sky is brightR
-
And can we smile when thou art deadS
Ah brothers even soT
The rose of summer will be redS
In spite of winter's snowT
-
Thou wouldst not leave us all in gloomU
Because thy song is stillV
Nor blight the banquet garland's bloomU
With grief's untimely chillV
-
The sighing wintry winds complainO
The singing bird has flownO
Hark heard I not that ringing strainO
That clear celestial toneO
-
How poor these pallid phrases seemW
How weak this tinkling lineO
As warbles through my waking dreamW
That angel voice of thineO
-
Thy requiem asks a sweeter layD
It falters on my tongueX
For all we vainly strive to sayD
Thou shouldst thyself have sungX
