Never Or Now - An Appeal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAF BGBG HIHI HJHJ AKAK LMLM

Listen young heroes your country is callingA
Time strikes the hour for the brave and the trueB
Now while the foremost are fighting and fallingA
Fill up the ranks that have opened for youB
-
You whom the fathers made free and defendedC
Stain not the scroll that emblazons their fameD
You whose fair heritage spotless descendedC
Leave not your children a birthright of shameD
-
Stay not for questions while Freedom stands gaspingA
Wait not till Honor lies wrapped in his pallE
Brief the lips' meeting be swift the hands' claspingA
Off for the wars is enough for them allF
-
Break from the arms that would fondly caress youB
Hark 't is the bugle blast sabres are drawnG
Mothers shall pray for you fathers shall bless youB
Maidens shall weep for you when you are goneG
-
Never or now cries the blood of a nationH
Poured on the turf where the red rose should bloomI
Now is the day and the hour of salvationH
Never or now peals the trumpet of doomI
-
Never or now roars the hoarse throated cannonH
Through the black canopy blotting the skiesJ
Never or now flaps the shell blasted pennonH
O'er the deep ooze where the Cumberland liesJ
-
From the foul dens where our brothers are dyingA
Aliens and foes in the land of their birthK
From the rank swamps where our martyrs are lyingA
Pleading in vain for a handful of earthK
-
From the hot plains where they perish outnumberedL
Furrowed and ridged by the battle field's ploughM
Comes the loud summons too long you have slumberedL
Hear the last Angel trump Never or NowM
