Latter-day Warnings Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGFG HIJI KLKL MNMN OPOP QRQR STST

WHEN legislators keep the lawA
When banks dispense with bolts and looksB
When berries whortle rasp and strawA
Grow bigger downwards through the boxC
-
When he that selleth house or landD
Shows leak in roof or flaw in rightE
When haberdashers choose the standD
Whose window hath the broadest lightE
-
When preachers tell us all they thinkF
And party leaders all they meanG
When what we pay for that we drinkF
From real grape and coffee beanG
-
When lawyers take what they would giveH
And doctors give what they would takeI
When city fathers eat to liveJ
Save when they fast for conscience' sakeI
-
When one that hath a horse on saleK
Shall bring his merit to the proofL
Without a lie for every nailK
That holds the iron on the hoofL
-
When in the usual place for ripsM
Our gloves are stitched with special careN
And guarded well the whalebone tipsM
Where first umbrellas need repairN
-
When Cuba's weeds have quite forgotO
The power of suction to resistP
And claret bottles harbor notO
Such dimples as would hold your fistP
-
When publishers no longer stealQ
And pay for what they stole beforeR
When the first locomotive's wheelQ
Rolls through the Hoosac Tunnel's boreR
-
Till then let Cumming blaze awayS
And Miller's saints blow up the globeT
But when you see that blessed dayS
Then order your ascension robeT
