December l SeptemberA
THOU too hast left us While with heads bowed lowB
And sorrowing hearts we mourned our summer's deadC
The flying season bent its Parthian bowD
And yet again our mingling tears were shedC
-
Was Heaven impatient that it could not waitE
The blasts of winter for earth's fruits to fallF
Were angels crowding round the open gateE
To greet the spirits coming at their callF
-
Nay let not fancies born of old beliefsG
Play with the heart beats that are throbbing stillH
And waste their outworn phrases on the griefsG
The silent griefs that words can only chillH
-
For thee dear friend there needs no highwrought layI
To shed its aureole round thy cherished nameJ
Thou whose plain home born speech of Yea and NayI
Thy truthful nature ever best becameJ
-
Death reaches not a spirit such as thineK
It can but steal the robe that hid thy wingsG
Though thy warm breathing presence we resignK
Still in our hearts its loving semblance clingsG
-
Peaceful thy message yet for struggling lightL
When Slavery's gauntlet in our face was flungM
While timid weaklings watched the dubious fightL
No herald's challenge more defiant rungM
-
Yet was thy spirit tuned to gentle themesG
Sought in the haunts thy humble youth had knownN
Our stern New England's hills and vales and streamsG
Thy tuneful idyls made them all their ownN
-
The wild flowers springing from thy native sodO
Lent all their charms thy new world song to fillH
Gave thee the mayflower and the golden rodO
To match the daisy and the daffodilH
-
In the brave records of our earlier timeP
A hero's deed thy generous soul inspiredQ
And many a legend told in ringing rhymeP
The youthful soul with high resolve has firedQ
-
Not thine to lean on priesthood's broken reedR
No barriers caged thee in a bigot's foldS
Did zealots ask to syllable thy creedR
Thou saidst ' Our Father ' and thy creed was toldS
-
Best loved and saintliest of our singing trainT
Earth's noblest tributes to thy name belongU
A lifelong record closed without a stainT
A blameless memory shrined in deathless songU
-
Lift from its quarried ledge a flawless stoneN
Smooth the green turf and bid the tablet riseG
And on its snow white surface carve aloneN
These words he needs no moreV
