No mystic charm no mortal artA
Can bid our loved companions stayB
The bands that clasp them to our heartA
Snap in death's frost and fall apartA
Like shadows fading with the dayB
They pass awayB
-
The young are stricken in their prideC
The old long tottering faint and fallD
Master and scholar side by sideC
Through the dark portals silent glideC
That open in life's mouldering wallD
And close on allD
-
Our friend's our teacher's task was doneE
When Mercy called him from on highF
A little cloud had dimmed the sunE
The saddening hours had just begunE
And darker days were drawing nighF
'T was time to dieF
-
A whiter soul a fairer mindG
A life with purer course and aimH
A gentler eye a voice more kindG
We may not look on earth to findG
The love that lingers o'er his nameH
Is more than fameH
-
These blood red summers ripen fastI
The sons are older than the siresJ
Ere yet the tree to earth is castI
The sapling falls before the blastI
Life's ashes keep their covered firesK
Its flame expiresK
-
Struck by the noiseless viewless foeL
Whose deadlier breath than shot or shellM
Has laid the best and bravest lowL
His boy all bright in morning's glowL
That high souled youth he loved so wellM
Untimely fellM
-
Yet still he wore his placid smileN
And trustful in the cheering creedO
That strives all sorrow to beguileN
Walked calmly on his way awhileN
Ah breast that leans on breaking reedO
Must ever bleedO
-
So they both left us sire and sonE
With opening leaf with laden boughP
The youth whose race was just begunE
The wearied man whose course was runE
Its record written on his browP
Are brothers nowP
-
Brothers The music of the soundQ
Breathes softly through my closing strainR
The floor we tread is holy groundQ
Those gentle spirits hovering roundQ
While our fair circle joins againS
Its broken chainR
