In Memory Of Charles Wentworth Upham, Jr. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF AGAG HIHI JKJK LBL MFMF NON LPLP

HE was all sunshine in his faceA
The very soul of sweetness shoneB
Fairest and gentlest of his raceA
None like him we can call our ownB
-
Something there was of one that diedC
In her fresh spring time long agoD
Our first dear Mary angel eyedC
Whose smile it was a bliss to knowD
-
Something of her whose love impartsE
Such radiance to her day's declineF
We feel its twilight in our heartsE
Bright as the earliest morning shineF
-
Yet richer strains our eye could traceA
That made our plainer mould more fairG
That curved the lip with happier graceA
That waved the soft and silken hairG
-
Dust unto dust the lips are stillH
That only spoke to cheer and blessI
The folded hands lie white and chillH
Unclasped from sorrow's last caressI
-
Leave him in peace he will not heedJ
These idle tears we vainly pourK
Give back to earth the fading weedJ
Of mortal shape his spirit woreK
-
'Shall I not weep my heartstrings tornL
My flower of love that falls half blownB
My youth uncrowned my life forlornL
A thorny path to walk alone '-
-
O Mary one who bore thy nameM
Whose Friend and Master was divineF
Sat waiting silent till He cameM
Bowed down in speechless grief like thineF
-
'Where have ye laid him ' 'Come ' they sayN
Pointing to where the loved one sleptO
Weeping the sister led the wayN
And seeing Mary 'Jesus wept '-
-
He weeps with thee with all that mournL
And He shall wipe thy streaming eyesP
Who knew all sorrows woman bornL
Trust in his word thy dead shall riseP
