She twirled the string of golden beadsA
That round her neck was hungB
My grandsire's gift the good old manC
Loved girls when he was youngB
And bending lightly o'er the cordD
And turning half awayE
With something like a youthful sighF
Thus spoke the maiden grayE
-
Well one may trail her silken robeG
And bind her locks with pearlsH
And one may wreathe the woodland roseI
Among her floating curlsH
And one may tread the dewy grassJ
And one the marble floorK
Nor half hid bosom heave the lessL
Nor broidered corset moreK
-
Some years ago a dark eyed girlM
Was sitting in the shadeN
There's something brings her to my mindO
In that young dreaming maidN
And in her hand she held a flowerP
A flower whose speaking hueQ
Said in the language of the heartR
'Believe the giver true '-
-
And as she looked upon its leavesS
The maiden made a vowT
To wear it when the bridal wreathU
Was woven for her browT
She watched the flower as day by dayE
The leaflets curled and diedV
But he who gave it never cameW
To claim her for his brideV
-
Oh many a summer's morning glowX
Has lent the rose its rayE
And many a winter's drifting snowX
Has swept its bloom awayE
But she has kept that faithless pledgeY
To this her winter hourP
And keeps it still herself aloneZ
And wasted like the flowerP
-
Her pale lip quivered and the lightA2
Gleamed in her moistening eyesB2
I asked her how she liked the tintsC2
In those Castilian skiesB2
She thought them misty 't was perhapsD2
Because she stood too nearE2
She turned away and as she turnedF2
I saw her wipe a tearG2
