H. C. M. H. S. J. K. W. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBAA CCDDCC EEFFEE GGHHGG IIJJII KKLLMK NNBBNN EEBBEE

THE dirge is played the throbbing death peal rungA
The sad voiced requiem sungA
On each white urn where memory dwellsB
The wreath of rustling immortellesB
Our loving hands have hungA
And balmiest leaves have strown and tenderest blossoms flungA
-
The birds that filled the air with songs have flownC
The wintry blasts have blownC
And these for whom the voice of springD
Bade the sweet choirs their carols singD
Sleep in those chambers loneC
Where snows untrodden lie unheard the night winds moanC
-
We clasp them all in memory as the vineE
Whose running stems intwineE
The marble shaft and steal aroundF
The lowly stone the nameless moundF
With sorrowing hearts resignE
Our brothers true and tried and close our broken lineE
-
How fast the lamps of life grow dim and dieG
Beneath our sunset skyG
Still fading as along our trackH
We cast our saddened glances backH
And while we vainly sighG
The shadowy day recedes the starry night draws nighG
-
As when from pier to pier across the tideI
With even keel we glideI
The lights we left along the shoreJ
Grow less and less while more yet moreJ
New vistas open wideI
Of fair illumined streets and casements golden eyedI
-
Each closing circle of our sunlit sphereK
Seems to bring heaven more nearK
Can we not dream that those we loveL
Are listening in the world aboveL
And smiling as they hearM
The voices known so well of friends that still are dearK
-
Does all that made us human fade awayN
With this dissolving clayN
Nay rather deem the blessed islesB
Are bright and gay with joyous smilesB
That angels have their playN
And saints that tire of song may claim their holidayN
-
All else of earth may perish love aloneE
Not heaven shall find outgrownE
Are they not here our spirit guestsB
With love still throbbing in their breastsB
Once more let flowers be strownE
Welcome ye shadowy forms we count you still our ownE
