All overgrown with bush and fernB
And straggling clumps of tangled treesC
With trunks that lean and boughs that turnB
Bent eastward by the mastering breezeC
With spongy bogs that drip and fillD
A yellow pond with muddy rainE
Beneath the shaggy southern hillD
Lies wet and low the Shawinut plainE
And hark the trodden branches crackF
A crow flaps off with startled screamG
A straying woodchuck canters backF
A bittern rises from the streamG
Leaps from his lair a frightened deerH
An otter plunges in the poolI
Here comes old Shawmut's pioneerH
The parson on his brindled bullJ

The streets are thronged with trampling feetK
The northern hill is ridged with gravesL
But night and morn the drum is beatK
To frighten down the rebel knavesL
The stones of King Street still are redM
And yet the bloody red coats comeN
I hear their pacing sentry's treadM
The click of steel the tap of drumN
And over all the open greenO
Where grazed of late the harmless kineO
The cannon's deepening ruts are seenO
The war horse stamps the bayonets shineO
The clouds are dark with crimson rainO
Above the murderous hirelings' denO
And soon their whistling showers shall stainO
The pipe clayed belts of Gage's menO

Around the green in morning lightP
The spired and palaced summits blazeQ
And sunlike from her Beacon heightP
The dome crowned city spreads her raysQ
They span the waves they belt the plainsR
They skirt the roads with bands of whiteP
Till with a flash of gilded panesR
Yon farthest hillside bounds the sightP
Peace Freedom Wealth no fairer viewS
Though with the wild bird's restless wingsT
We sailed beneath the noontide's blueS
Or chased the moonlight's endless ringsT
Here fitly raised by grateful handsU
His holiest memory to recallV
The Hero's Patriot's image standsU
He led our sires who won them allV
