For The Dedication Of The New City Library, Boston Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCE FGFG HIHI JKLK MNMN OOOO PQPQ RNRN SOSO FTFT

PROUDLY beneath her glittering domeA
Our three hilled city greets the mornB
Here Freedom found her virgin homeA
The Bethlehem where her babe was bornB
-
The lordly roofs of traffic riseC
Amid the smoke of household firesD
High o'er them in the peaceful skiesC
Faith points to heaven her clustering spiresE
-
Can Freedom breathe if ignorance reignF
Shall Commerce thrive where anarchs ruleG
Will Faith her half fledged brood retainF
If darkening counsels cloud the schoolG
-
Let in the light from every ageH
Some gleams of garnered wisdom pourI
And fixed on thought's electric pageH
Wait all their radiance to restoreI
-
Let in the light in diamond minesJ
Their gems invite the hand that delvesK
So learning's treasured jewels shineL
Ranged on the alcove's ordered shelvesK
-
From history's scroll the splendor streamsM
From science leaps the living rayN
Flashed from the poet's glowing dreamsM
The opal fires of fancy playN
-
Let in the light these windowed wallsO
Shall brook no shadowing colonnadesO
But day shall flood the silent hallsO
Till o'er yon hills the sunset fadesO
-
Behind the ever open gateP
No pikes shall fence a crumbling throneQ
No lackeys cringe no courtiers waitP
This palace is the people's ownQ
-
Heirs of our narrow girdled pastR
How fair the prospect we surveyN
Where howled unheard the wintry blastR
And rolled unchecked the storm swept bayN
-
These chosen precincts set apartS
For learned toil and holy shrinesO
Yield willing homes to every artS
That trains or strengthens or refinesO
-
Here shall the sceptred mistress reignF
Who heeds her meanest subject's callT
Sovereign of all their vast domainF
The queen the handmaid of them allT
