JANUARYA
-
His birthday Nay we need not speakB
The name each heart is beatingC
Each glistening eye and flushing cheekB
In light and flame repeatingC
-
We come in one tumultuous tideD
One surge of wild emotionE
As crowding through the Frith of ClydeD
Rolls in the Western OceanE
-
As when yon cloudless quartered moonF
Hangs o'er each storied riverG
The swelling breasts of Ayr and DoonF
With sea green wavelets quiverG
-
The century shrivels like a scrollH
The past becomes the presentI
And face to face and soul to soulH
We greet the monarch peasantI
-
While Shenstone strained in feeble flightsJ
With Corydon and PhillisK
While Wolfe was climbing Abraham's heightsJ
To snatch the Bourbon liliesL
-
Who heard the wailing infant's cryM
The babe beneath the sheeliugC
Whose song to night in every skyC
Will shake earth's starry ceilingC
-
Whose passion breathing voice ascendsN
And floats like incense o'er usO
Whose ringing lay of friendship blendsN
With labor's anvil chorusO
-
We love him not for sweetest songC
Though never tone so tenderG
We love him even in his wrongC
His wasteful self surrenderG
-
We praise him not for gifts divineF
His Muse was born of womanF
His manhood breathes in every lineF
Was ever heart more humanF
-
We love him praise him just for thisK
In every form and featureG
Through wealth and want through woe and blissK
He saw his fellow creatureG
-
No soul could sink beneath his loveP
Not even angel blastedQ
No mortal power could soar aboveP
The pride that all outlastedR
-
Ay Heaven had set one living manF
Beyond the pedant's tetherG
His virtues frailties HE may scanF
Who weighs them all togetherG
-
I fling my pebble on the cairnF
Of him though dead undyingC
Sweet Nature's nursling bonniest bairnF
Beneath her daisies lyingC
-
The waning suns the wasting globeS
Shall spare the minstrel's storyA
The centuries weave his purple robeS
The mountain mist of gloryA
