Farewell To J. R. Lowell Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EEFF GGHH IJKK LLMM

FAREWELL for the bark has her breast to the tideA
And the rough arms of Ocean are stretched for his brideA
The winds from the mountain stream over the bayB
One clasp of the hand then away and awayB
-
I see the tall mast as it rocks by the shoreC
The sun is declining I see it once moreC
To day like the blade in a thick waving fieldD
To morrow the spike on a Highlander's shieldD
-
Alone while the cloud pours its treacherous breathE
With the blue lips all round her whose kisses are deathE
Ah think not the breeze that is urging her sailF
Has left her unaided to strive with the galeF
-
There are hopes that play round her like fires on the mastG
That will light the dark hour till its danger has pastG
There are prayers that will plead with the storm when it ravesH
And whisper 'Be still ' to the turbulent wavesH
-
-
Nay think not that Friendship has called us in vainI
To join the fair ring ere we break it againJ
There is strength in its circle you lose the bright starK
But its sisters still chain it though shining afarK
-
I give you one health in the juice of the vineL
The blood of the vineyard shall mingle with mineL
Thus thus let us drain the last dew drops of goldM
As we empty our hearts of the blessings they holdM
